JUNE 2nd - JUNE 21st - "HIGHLAND SECONDARY STUDENTS"

Come experience the creative endeavors of Highland Secondary School art students from grades 9 through 12.  The work spans various mediums including: pencil, pencil crayon, charcoal, pastel, pen and ink, acrylic and watercolor painting, clay and paper relief sculpture, and more.

The students have created a huge variety of work throughout the many courses offered at Highland. These courses range from Foundations based classes, which expose students to a wide range of media and techniques, to more specialized classes like Clay 11 which concentrate on exploring the creative possibilities and mastery of a single medium.  As well there will be work included from the Art Careers 12 students, this demanding course is taken by students considering post secondary art direction and is designed to push their skills to a higher level while producing portfolio quality pieces.

This exhibit is a great opportunity to view the Valley’s future artists. Several pieces may be for sale.  The gallery will not be taking any commissions on work that is sold.  However, the school has offered the gallery 10% of any sales so that it may go towards the gallery’s high school bursary program.  Memberships to the gallery will be available for $20.00 during the show and donations are gratefully accepted towards the high school bursary fund.  The normal 10% discount on pieces sold will not be offered to members during this show.  We hope that the public and membership take advantage of viewing and supporting some of our very talented up and coming artists.  This is a fantastic opportunity for students to show their work in a professional setting to the entire community.

Both art teachers Nathan Senner and Charlotte Hood-Tanner are very proud of the work their students have created and the students are excited about the chance to have their work shown in a public gallery.

The show will run June 2nd – June 21st.  There will be a special opening night on Thursday, June 3rd from 7 – 9 pm.  The gallery is open every day from 1 – 4 pm.   The gallery is located under at 1729 Comox Avenue and can be reached by either going down the staircase or from the parking lot at the rear.  We are next to the Comox Lions Den and the Comox Library.  For more information please visit our web site at www.pearlellisgallery.com.

June, 2010 - Entry for Communities in Bloom

As Comox By The Sea is such a beautifully blooming community, the Comox BIA will submit its second annual entry to the Provincial program, Communities in Bloom.

Communities in Bloom recognizes the best 'blooming' communities throughout BC, and we know Comox is definitely at the top of the list!

June, 2010 - Comox By The Sea supplement will be published

Once again, the Comox BIA will be publishing two Comox By The Sea supplements in the Comox Valley Record.

These substantial pull-outs help let the rest of the Comox Valley learn more about Comox By The Sea and are a great way for our members to reach new customers.

JUNE 23rd - JULY 12th - PEARL ELLIS GALLERY PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD SHOW AND SALE

The Pearl Ellis Gallery will kick off its 33st summer show season with its fifth Member’s People’s Choice show and sale.  This exhibition will run from Wednesday, June 23th to Monday, July 12th .  The Gallery will be open to the public every day from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.  There will be a “Meet the Artists” held Saturday, June 26th  to celebrate the opening of the members’ show and all are welcome to attend.  It will be a great opportunity to meet the artists in the show and to view the fabulous art.

At this show the public, as well as the members, will be encouraged to fill out a ballot selecting their favourite piece of artwork in the exhibit.  This will be the fifth  offering of a People’s Choice award and we are looking forward to the participation of the public as well as the gallery membership.  The balloting will go on throughout the first part of the show and the votes will be tabulated on July 4th at 4:00 pm.  We will announce the winner and the runners up a week before the end of the show on Monday, July 5th at 1:00 pm.   The winning artist will receive a $100.00 gift certificate from Whyte’s Framing and a plaque donated by Bob and Sheila Pollock.  There will also be two draws made from all the ballots with a lucky member of the public receiving a gift certificate for 20% off on a piece of art that they purchase at the gallery during 2010 and a member of the Pearl Ellis Gallery will have their name drawn to receive a free membership renewal for 2011.  The People’s Choice winner will have the right of first refusal to appear as guest artist at the following year’s Fall Fair.  Last year’s winner, Saskia King, will be this year’s guest artist at the Fall Fair, held August at the Courtenay Fairgrounds.  All in all, this members’ show should prove exciting and have an element of fun as well.

Visitors can expect to see quality pieces of work by over 40 established local artists and new artists.  The Pearl Ellis Gallery is always a great place to visit and to shop for that unique new piece of art for one’s home, business or as a gift.  The gallery also carries a good selection of art cards suitable for all occasions.  Members receive a 10% discount on purchases of art during the opening ‘reception’ or ‘meet and greet the artist’ day of each new show.  New memberships are always available for $20.00.

The gallery is located in the lower level of 1729 Comox Avenue and can be reached from the parking lot at the rear. More information can be obtained by visiting our web site at www.pearlellisgallery.com.
